In standard pipe sizes, selecting a butt fusion machine is usually straightforward. But once the diameter reaches a certain scale, the situation changes. It is no longer just about using a bigger machine—structure, stability, and system coordination all become critical.
For this type of application, Welping developed a custom 2000mm butt fusion machine. Instead of following a fixed model, the machine was configured based on specific project requirements.
From a structural point of view, the frame is noticeably reinforced, paired with a multi-layer clamp system. This is not simply for stronger clamping, but more importantly for maintaining alignment during welding. At this size, even small deviations can affect the final joint quality.
The hydraulic system is set up as an independent unit to ensure stable and controllable pressure output. In large-diameter welding, consistency matters more than peak pressure. Fluctuations during the process can easily lead to variations in the weld.
A similar consideration applies to the heating system. As pipe diameter increases, so does the heating area. Temperature uniformity becomes harder to maintain. The design therefore focuses on overall thermal capacity and temperature distribution, rather than just reaching a target value.
Another practical aspect is operation. Equipment at this scale is no longer handled by a single operator. A working platform and basic safety features are integrated into the structure to make on-site operation more manageable.
Machines in the 2000mm range are better understood as project-based equipment rather than standard products. Different applications often lead to different configurations.
