What Makes Up a Complete Butt Fusion Welding Machine?|FX630 as an Example

A complete butt fusion welding machine consists of several core units: the main frame, facer, heater, and hydraulic power unit. For large-diameter welding, a crane lifter may also be used as an optional accessory. Using the FX630 as an example, this article outlines the full machine configuration.

In HDPE pipeline construction, each component of a butt fusion welding machine plays a specific role. Together, they support the entire welding process—from pipe positioning and facing, to heating and final fusion.

During a recent factory welding test with the FX630, we captured a photo that clearly shows all major components in use. Based on this setup, the following sections explain what a complete welding system includes.
01. Machine Body (Main Frame) — The Structural Core
The main frame is responsible for holding the pipes in place and applying axial welding pressure. It generally consists of:
· Three or four clamps, depending on the model
· Guide rods and a sliding mechanism
· Hydraulic connection points

Pipe alignment, pressure application, cooling, and joint formation all take place on the main frame, making it the central element of the welding system.
02. Facer — Preparing Clean and Aligned Pipe Ends
The facer is a key component used to prepare pipe ends before welding. Its functions include:
· Trimming and facing pipe ends
· Removing surface oxidation
· Ensuring both pipe ends are flat, smooth, and aligned on the same axis

FX series facers use a full gear-driven transmission, providing stable cutting performance and extended service life.
03. Heater — Bringing Pipe Ends to Welding Temperature
The heater raises the pipe ends to the required fusion temperature through controlled and uniform heating. Typical features include:
· Even heat distribution across the surface
· Accurate temperature control
· PTFE non-stick coating
· Insulated handles for safe operation

Consistent heating is essential for producing a reliable fusion joint.
04. Hydraulic Power Unit — Managing Pressure and Motion
The hydraulic power unit supplies the force needed for clamping and pipe movement. Its functions include:
· Providing pushing and clamping force
· Allowing adjustable welding pressure
· Displaying temperature and timing information

The FX series hydraulic unit features an enclosed design that helps protect internal components from dust and moisture, making it suitable for on-site construction environments.

Why Is the Crane Optional?
The crane assists by:
· Lifting the facer and heater
· Reducing physical strain on operators
· Improving safety and efficiency when handling heavy components

However, it is not always required.
1.Smaller machines do not require lifting assistance
For models such as FX160, FX250, and FX315, components can typically be handled manually.
2.Larger pipe sizes increase component weight
From 500 mm and above, the facer and heater become significantly heavier, making lifting equipment practical.
3.Job-site conditions vary
Some contractors already have lifting tools available, so offering the crane as an option allows for greater flexibility.
For these reasons, the crane is provided as an optional accessory, selected according to project needs.
